The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to responsible forest management. The FSC is concerned with protecting ecosystems, laborers, and indigenous populations affected by the forestry industry.
In order to become FSC certified, a company must be able to guarantee that all materials used to produce their products come from sources that comply with all FSC standards. The FSC works to promote:
- Zero Deforestation: FSC certified forests are CO2 neutral, as trees are harvested at a replaceable rate, which prevents net loss of forests over time. The FSC also protects high value conservation (HVC) forests by identifying and maintaining them.
- Labor Rights: The FSC requires workers in FSC certified forests to be properly trained, fairly paid, and protected by appropriate safety measures. The FSC also requires workers to be afforded the right to create or join trade unions.
- Biodiversity Preservation: The FSC engages in the protection of endangered plant and animal species.
- Community Rights: The FSC requires companies to consult local populations before undertaking any forestry work, and to uphold all indigenous legal and cultural rights to the land and resources in question. The FSC also promotes the use of local labor, and often engages in local infrastructure development projects.
